How Does Invisalign Teeth Straightening Work? Dr. Colleen Williamson of Grand Dental Arts Explains

Dentists have long used traditional braces to straighten teeth. However, as patients demanded a more discreet and comfortable orthodontic system, it led to the invention of Invisalign. This revolutionary orthodontics system uses removable, clear braces to move your teeth — no conspicuous wires and brackets.

While Invisalign has taken the orthodontics world by storm, is it worth the hype? Does it really work? Grand Dental Arts in Toms River, New Jersey, describes the science behind Invisalign and the problems it’s fit to tackle.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign uses a series of clear trays to move your teeth into the proper position. Clear aligners are popular with teens and adults looking for a straighter smile without conventional metal braces.

A prospective Invisalign user begins with a consultation with an Invisalign dentist like Dr. Williamson. After evaluating your eligibility for Invisalign, we scan your mouth using an intraoral camera — no room for messy physical impressions. Then, we feed the images into Invisalign software, which maps out your treatment plan. This amazing software can determine when and how each tooth moves and after how long.

Once aligned with the treatment, we send your digital molds to a dental lab to custom-make your teeth straightening trays. After about two weeks, you will pick up the trays from our office to begin your treatment. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign can be removed when eating or cleaning teeth. However, they are most effective when worn for 20-22 hours daily.

Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before graduating to the next set in the series. This pattern continues until you reach your desired outcome. Once done with treatment, we recommend retainers to keep your straight smile intact.
