New Patient Dental Exam, How It Benefits You

At Grand Dental Arts, we recommend scheduling a regular dentist check-up at least twice a year. If you have problems with cavities or dental disease, you may need to see your Toms River, New Jersey dentist more frequently. Newbies to our dental practice will be given a new patient dental exam to provide us with a chance to get to know you better and evaluate your dental needs. Here’s what you can expect from your first dental visit.

New Patient Dental Exam

A new patient dental exam allows you to meet Dr. Colleen Williamson and our dental team and get to know our facility. During your visit, we’ll review your oral health and medical history to better understand your oral care needs. We’ll take note of any health conditions you may have, as well as the medications you’re taking that could impact oral treatments. We’ll ask you questions about your oral health and discuss any concerns you may have about your gums or teeth so we can address them adequately.

This information will enable Dr. Williamson to develop an oral health plan to meet your ongoing dental needs. After recording this data, we’ll proceed with your examination.

Your new patient dental exam includes the following:

  • Digital X-rays – We’ll x-ray your mouth to get a clearer picture of your oral health. X-rays will uncover hidden issues with decay between your teeth or bone loss from periodontal disease.
  • Periodontal evaluation – We’ll evaluate your gum health for signs of gum disease.
  • Oral exam – We’ll visually inspect your teeth for signs of decay, infection, or irregularities. We’ll discuss any problems that showed up on the x-rays and recommend options for treatment.
  • Dental wellness scan – The iTero Wellness Scan is a non-invasive and painless dental scanner that captures detailed images of your teeth and gums. This tool is designed to provide a thorough analysis of your dental health condition, allowing for accurate monitoring of changes in your teeth and gums. It uses precise measurements to identify potential issues like gum recession and cavities, enabling early intervention for better treatment outcomes.
  • Oral cancer screening – Your new patient’s dental exam also includes an oral cancer screening to detect early warning signs of this disease.
