Tooth Colored Fillings

How to Prolong the Longevity of BPA-Free Composite Fillings

Composite (tooth-colored) fillings at Grand Dental Arts are excellent for treating cavities and minor tooth decay. Unfortunately, like many dental restorations, composite fillings don’t last forever. However, your fillings can last as many as 10 years, depending on how well you care for them. Drs. Colleen Williamson and Marya Ijaz in Toms River, New Jersey, share handy tips on how to make your composite fillings last longer.

Extending the lifespan of your white fillings

Composite fillings offer many benefits in dentistry, including natural appearance, safety, and conservative treatment. Composites may not look as strong as their metal counterparts, but have a remarkable lifespan. However, the longevity of your restorations all goes down to how well you care for them.

Observe the tips below to ensure your fillings last long.

  • Diligent oral hygiene: Caring for your tooth ensures your filling is secured on a healthy foundation. Brush your teeth daily with fluoride toothpaste. Floss at least once every day, preferably before bedtime. You can also consider using an anti-bacterial mouthwash to kill harmful bacteria
  • Make healthier dietary choices: Cut back on sugary foods to reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease. Limit the intake of hard and chewy foods as they tend to wear out your fillings faster. Lastly, like your natural enamel, composite fillings can be discolored. That said, limit the consumption of stain-causing foods like wine, tea, and coffee. You should also avoid smoking entirely
  • Consider a custom mouthguard: Do you have a history of chronic teeth grinding (bruxism)? The force exerted during this bad oral habit can damage or dislodge your filling. Talk to your dentist about a custom-fitted nightguard to protect your fillings and entire smile from bruxism
  • Regular visits with the dentist: Routine dental exams and cleanings prevent oral problems that can compromise the integrity of your fillings. Additionally, these oral exams allow us to check the condition of your fillings for prompt remedy
